Conservative purists such as Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh have been besides themselves, agonizing over the apostate John McCain. Refusing, so far, to endorse him or even admit he might be human.
John McCain has been off the Republican reservation on some major issues, especially immigration. But he’s been a stalwart on most things that are, or should be, near and dear to the Right.
The most important is national defense, and there is no candidate for higher office who can match his stand and record. And know this: without a strong defense, none of the rest is going to matter very much.
Second is the right to life, and on this, McCain is as good as it gets among successful politicos. Third is economics, and here he voted against the Bush tax cuts. He was wrong, and he has recanted and now wishes to make them permanent.
Except for this supposed heresy, McCain has stood tall against pork barrel spending, which has been the drug of choice for free-spending Republicans, and which contributed to the defeats of 2006. On this, McCain is untouchable, especially against pork specialists such as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama.
John McCain is a principled conservative. Who does not toe the party line all the time, at least according to some. How ’bout some endorsements of his conservative bona fides that have just come through:
- John McCain is a “true conservative…is very strong on national defense. He is tough fiscally. He believes the tax cuts ought to be permanent. He is pro-life. His principles are sound and solid as far as I’m concerned.– George W. Bush
- “John McCain was very active and supportive during my confirmation hearings to be the U.S. Ambassador to the UN. His belief in me at that time was a testament to his courage to fight the liberals in the Senate and vigorously advance American interests at the UN.”
I whole-heartedly endorse John McCain for President because when he takes office in January 2009 he will be prepared immediately to lead us. John will not need on the job training.”American conservatives will have a President they can be proud of in John McCain.”– John Bolton
- John McCain “has dedicated his life to defending human rights around the world, including the rights of the unborn.”– Gary Bauer
You want more conservative bona fides? Consider these lifetime ratings from the American Conservative Union for John McCain and both his likely opponents in the general election:
- McCain 82.3
- Clinton 9.0
- Obama 8.0
Now, who should a conservative voter choose? Tough question; need a moment to think… Sarcasm aside, one would need to be willfully stubborn to not go with McCain if you profess to hold conservative values.
Coulter, Limbaugh, et. al: you are not doing this nation any service by not endorsing John McCain. These times are much too dangerous to leave our national security in the hands of a triangulating schemer (Clilnton) or an out-and-out fool (Obama).
