Here’s an interesting column by Dick Polman of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The subtext: if you are white, you are probably a racist if you don’t vote for Obama. The surface text? The Dread Bradley Effect has not been put in its grave.
In simple terms, Bradley attempts to explain how Tom Bradley lost an election the polling said at the time he would win handily. One word answer? Bradley was black, and people lied about voting for him.
Polman’s thesis is that not much has changed:
“I lived through that,” [Dee Dee] Myers [on the Bradley loss] said. “We’re whistling past the graveyard if we think that race was not a factor in the Democratic primaries. Today’s young voters will get us past these attitudes,” but it will take time. As for millions of older voters, “they talk about having ‘culture’ problems [with Obama], but to separate culture from race is impossible.”
Spoken like a true lefty. The only reason we might not vote for Obama is because of his race. We are all wicked, wicked racists. Excuse me, I’ve got to see if my sheet is back from the laundry; got a Klan meetin’ to attend…
Polman is wrong. Obama has made himself the black candidate. Whether he did this with malice aforethought or simply went along for the predictable ride is neither here nor there. He is not trans-racial; he is not half-white, only half black. And, under the racist “one drop of blood,” he is playing to whatever racist sentiments still may exist in our society. So far, it seems to have worked to his advantage.
Blacks seem to be overwhelmingly racist. Otherwise, how to explain their support of 90-95 percent for Obama? Are blacks as a group so enamored with arugula and intellectual snobs? I don’t think so. No; the only reason Obama gains so much support is because he has sold himself as a black man.
As for whites, sure there are some who are racists. But there are more who, unlike blacks, are more concerned with their pocketbooks than with their skin color. And Obama will raise their taxes, sure as God made little green apples.
That’s not racist. That’s what left-wing Democrats do.
