Today, June 14, is Flag Day. As such, the day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our national flag in 1777.
It is a good thing for a nation to have a flag. But more important by far is the ability to protect and defend that nation. Hence the founding, by the Continental Congress, of what would become the United States Army, on June 14, 1775. 234 years ago; a long time in anyone’s book.
It is only right and proper that our army got its start before our flag. Symbols are important. Armed force to allow freedom under those symbols is the sine qua non of freedom.
Happy birthday, Army: Get some; stay strong.
