Duct tape makes you smart

This immortal line was spoken by the Burn Notice character Michael Westen. The full quotation is

Guns make you stupid. Better to fight your wars with duct tape. Duct tape makes you smart.

And, as a critic at ManZine states, Burn Notice is the “best show on television.”

To which I can only add, amen, brother. For me, one of the best parts of the show is Bruce Campbell’s character Sam Axe, a man after my own heart: beer, nachos, mojitos. Repeat. I’ve known guys a lot like Sam in my career. Basic military skill sets, eroded over a lifetime of good living.

Say what you will, Sam Axe enjoys life, and, more importantly, still pulls his not inconsiderable weight. Sam is credible; Michael Westen is simply too skilled at too many things to be even remotely real. However, as a fantasy, he’s fun to watch: we all wish we could be like Mike.

As for guns making you stupid, I know that whenever I had to carry one, I had to always notch down any thoughts I might have had about being invulnerable. So, yes, in my limited but real experience, guns do make you stupid. And, as we guys all know, anything can be fixed with duct tape.

Exactly right. It’s pretty standard in both the spy and sci-fi genres for the main character to be world class at just about everything. See James Bond, Jason Bourne, or even Jean Luc Picard. They’re great as ideals but rather silly as exemplars.
