The Justice Department on Friday rejected South Carolina’s law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, saying it makes it harder for minorities to cast ballots. It was the first voter ID law to be refused by the federal agency in nearly 20 years.
South Carolina is under the gun because of some unpleasantness in the mid-1860s. Fort Sumter, and all of that, I suppose.
Just kidding. South Carolina has a bad history of discrimination against blacks. Along with every other state in the Union, the Episcopal Church, the Catholic Church, Baptists, world without end, amen. The point? The bad past is dead and buried. Has been for decades.
South Carolina, though, is still considered evil incarnate by the politically-motivated Obamatons in the corrupt Department of Justice. They’re fast and furious when it comes to punishing states that are under Republican control.
So, the question for those of us who don’t want the feds in our knickers is simple: what’s wrong with requiring a photo ID for voters? As reported by the Wall Street Journal (subscription required),
10% of nonwhite registered voters and 8.4% of white voters don’t have a state DMV photo ID.
Well, prima facie evidence of heinous discrimination, that 1.6%. Now, let’s ask a better question: how much does it cost to actually get a state-issued photo ID in South Carolina? Is this another form of the poll tax, used many years ago to keep poor (and especially poor black) folks from voting?
Let’s see. According to the South Carolina DMV, the cost for a state-issued ID is…drum roll, please, hope y’all are sitting down for this huge number comin’ at ya: zero. Free. No cost.
Given this, the federal Department of Justice seems to have assumed that blacks and other minorities are, you pick, too stupid, too lazy, or both, to go and get that free ID. DOJ’s further assumption is that these poor, downtrodden minorities will get to the polls to vote, but can’t be bothered to get that free ID.
South Carolina, on the other hand, assumes that people who don’t have a driver’s license or other state or military photo ID are smart enough to get that free ID. Did I mention that it was free?
The upshot of all this is that this is a blatant politically-driven move to both punish a Republican-controlled state and enable greater voter fraud. Fraud that will favor voting by illegal immigrants, out-of-staters, and, a Democrat specialty, the Voting Dead.
