Gimme shelter

The image showing some of the major sanctuary cities is from the Washington Examiner. These are places where U.S. immigration law is freely ignored, and local authorities will usually (if not always) decline to hand illegal immigrants over to the feds for deportation.

From the story in the Examiner that included this graphic:

According to CIS and another website, Ohio Jobs & Justice PAC, Washington, D.C., and multiple cities around the nation’s capital are included where local police forces are told to not cooperate with federal authorities.

Which cities fit the definition can be open to debate. Jessica Vaughan, CIS director of policy studies, who helped pull the map together, said the number could go over 300.

“One could also argue that any jurisdiction that provides drivers licenses, or welfare benefits, or public housing, or municipal ID cards is a sanctuary,” she explained.

Of course, in the Obama administration, it’s not likely there will be much emphasis on deporting such illegals. Ah, but they are just tax-paying, law-abiding soon-to-be citizens, aren’t they? Aren’t they?

Perhaps not, and it appears that the good burghers of San Francisco felt quite good about themselves before turning over this poor, misunderstood, Mexican who was just looking to score dope.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the perp

…was freed despite a request from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of DHS, to the city’s sheriff’s department that would have enabled the federal agency to take him into custody.

And so it goes. Sanctuary cities seem to track rather well with cities that suffer under do-good, left-wing governance. Here’s a modest proposal: how about we let every town and county decide which U.S. Federal laws they will choose not to enforce.

How about if towns in Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas (just for example, the logic applies everywhere) don’t enforce civil rights laws? Or fair housing laws? Or, for that matter, onerous health and safety regulations?

Why have at least two presidents chosen to turn a blind eye to sanctuary cities that openly do not follow federal immigration law? How long do you think Obama would let stand a new “sanctuary county free from DOJ harassment?”

How about some brave municipality take something on that their citizens might agree on, but would mightily annoy our masters in Washington, DC?
